$Intel(INTC.US)$ Finance|Huawei's new laptop with Intel AI chip MEP: Not Acceptable

Huawei launched the first artificial intelligence (AI) laptop MateBook X Pro this week, which is powered by Intel's AI chip Core Ultra 9 processor.

The Intel Core Ultra processor, released at the end of last year, is based on Intel 4 process technology, with more advanced processing capabilities for artificial intelligence (AI) than previous products. The chips, quoted by Reuters, said the chips were shipped under existing licenses, which were not included in recent U.S. restrictions on artificial intelligence exports to China.

A Republican member of the United States called the incident unacceptable, saying the release of the laptop reflects the Biden administration's permission to “turn the green light” on sanctioned Huawei and actively sought to undermine national security in the United States. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a Republican, said in response to a leaked statement that the approvals must stop. Two years ago, he was told that he would stop issuing licenses to Huawei. As of today, the policy does not seem to have changed.

The MateBook X Pro is the first laptop to use Huawei's large scale model, and it works with third-party eco-partners such as Word of Mind, WPS AI, Jetstar, Smart Speech, and more than 100 AI smart apps.

The U.S. Commerce Department declined to comment. Huawei and Intel did not respond to requests for comment.
