Goldman Sachs: expect retirement funds to sell about $32 billion in U.S. stocks soon.

Retirement funds may sell about $32 billion in U.S. stocks to rebalance their positions as the quarter draws to a close, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said. That would be the biggest adjustment since June 2023, analysts at Goldman Sachs' FICC and equities division wrote. While Wall Street's forecasts for pension flows vary widely, retirement fund withdrawals could put additional pressure on the broader market amid light trading around Easter.
After the S&P 500 soared about 26% since late October, traders are concerned that long positions may have been overstretched and that stocks are vulnerable to profit-taking in the short term. Institutional investors and pensions typically have strict asset allocation limits and assess market exposure at month-end and quarter-end. The S&P 500 has risen 8.8 since the start of 2024, and global bonds have fallen about 2 percent cumulatively, meaning funds may need to sell more stocks than usual. $Goldman Sachs(GS.US)$
