Google Nears Release of AI Software Gemini
$Alphabet-A(GOOGL.US)$'s Google has reportedly given a limited number of companies early access to Gemini, its conversational AI software. The software is intended to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4 model and Google has increased its investment in generative AI this year to catch up after OpenAI's ChatGPT launch last year.
At the Google I/O developer conference in May 2023, CEO Sundar Pichai announced the company's upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) system, Gemini.
Conversational AI systems like Bard are 'not the end state' but waypoints leading towards more advanced chatbots," Pichai said, "Gemini and future iterations will ultimately become 'incredible universal personal assistants' integrated throughout people's daily lives in areas like travel, work, and entertainment."

Gemini Will Come With Various Capabilities
Gemini is a set of large language models that power chatbots and generate text, music lyrics, news stories, summarizations, and even code and images based on user requests. Google is currently providing developers with an early version of Gemini, but not the largest model it is developing yet. Gemini will be offered to companies through Google Cloud Vertex AI service.
Last month, the company introduced generative AI to its Search tool for users in India and Japan that will show text or visual results to prompts, including summaries. It had also made its AI-powered tools available to enterprise customers at a monthly price of $30 per user.
Competitors Are Interested In Gemini's Performance
OpenAI CEO tweeted what appeared to be a response to a paywalled-article reporting that Google Gemini could outperform GPT-4. There was no official response to the follow-up question by Elon Musk on whether the numbers provided by SemiAnalysis are correct.

Meta Also Launches AI Model to Compete With OpenAI
Although the outlook for Gemini appears positive, it is not the only large language model (LLM) set to rival OpenAI. The Wall Street Journal reported that $Meta Platforms(META.US)$ is also developing an AI model to compete with the GPT model underlying ChatGPT. This news came shortly after the AI Insight Forum, where a group of technology CEOs met privately with some members of the US Senate to discuss the future of AI.

The latest news from Meta and Google comes a few days after the first AI Insight Forum, where tech CEOs privately met with a portion of the United States Senate to discuss the future of AI.
The combination of DeepMind's latest AI research with Google's computational resources could have a significant impact. If Gemini meets expectations, it could transform interactive AI and help Google bring responsible AI to billions of people.
