Markets Pause Ahead of Big Tech Earnings as Geopolitical Risks Remain Elevated

U.S. stocks finished Monday’s volatile session modestly lower as investors balanced escalating geopolitical tensions with a busy earnings week that could determine the market’s next move.

The Dow Jones fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq edged down 0.1%. Healthcare led the declines, while communication services outperformed.

This week’s focus now shifts to corporate earnings, with 86 S&P 500 companies scheduled to report. The biggest catalysts will come from Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday, followed by results from Intel, IBM, AT&T, Verizon, American Express, Philip Morris, and T-Mobile later in the week.

At the same time, investors continue monitoring developments in the Middle East. The U.S. has carried out its ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran, while tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated. Oil prices moved higher, with WTI crude rising to around $83 per barrel and Brent approaching $89, reflecting ongoing concerns over potential supply disruptions.

Treasury yields also climbed, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising to 4.6%, indicating investors continue pricing in higher inflation and interest-rate expectations.

My View

Today’s market decline wasn’t driven by a major deterioration in fundamentals.

Instead, investors appear to be waiting for confirmation.

The next few days will likely determine whether the AI-led rally can regain momentum or whether recent concerns about valuations, margins, and AI spending begin weighing more heavily on sentiment.

Alphabet’s earnings may be particularly important. Investors will be watching not only cloud growth and AI monetization, but also updates on capital expenditures and demand for AI infrastructure. Tesla’s report will provide another read on EV demand, margins, autonomous driving progress, and broader consumer spending.

Meanwhile, geopolitical risk remains an important wildcard.

Higher oil prices could add renewed inflation pressure, potentially delaying expectations for lower interest rates. Rising Treasury yields also tighten financial conditions, creating an additional headwind for high-growth technology stocks.

Despite Monday’s weakness, the broader market remains relatively resilient. Investors continue rotating between sectors rather than exiting equities altogether, suggesting this remains a period of consolidation rather than broad risk aversion.

With several Magnificent Seven companies reporting over the coming weeks, earnings—not macro headlines—are likely to become the primary driver of market direction.
