Johns Hopkins Medical Group received a $17 million donation from a group of private donors to launch the Center for Psychedelic Medicine and Consciousness Research. With this donation, the center will become the first such research center in the US and the largest such research center in the world. Since there is no federal funding to support such human treatment research, the new center will rely on this donation announced today to advance the emerging field of psychedelic medicine and health.
Psychedelic drugs cause unique and profound changes in a person's consciousness within a few hours. Much of Johns Hopkins Medical Group's early research work focused on psilocybin, a chemical found in so-called “psychedelic mushrooms.”
At the Center for Psychedelic Medicine and Consciousness, researchers will focus on how psychedelic drugs affect human behavior, brain function, learning and memory, brain biology, and mood. Psilocybin studies in patients will determine the drug's efficacy as a novel therapy in treating alcohol abuse in patients with opioid addiction, Alzheimer's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), post-treatment Lyme syndrome (previously known as chronic Lyme disease), anorexia nervosa, and major depression. The researchers hope to tailor accurate drug treatment plans according to the specific needs of individual patients.
