Crypto & Stocks | CPI in hours: Can Softer Core Inflation Rescue BTC and AI Stocks?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release May CPI data tonight at 8:30 a.m. E.T., one week before the Federal Reserve’s June policy meeting. Markets are already cautious: $Invesco $Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ.US)$ is down 0.88% pre-market, while $SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY.US)$  is down 0.54%.

The headline number may look uncomfortable. Forecasts from four major institutions cluster around 4.17%–4.30% YoY, above April’s 3.81% and potentially the highest reading in roughly three years.

But the more important signal may come from core inflation. Several banks expect core CPI to rise only 0.17%–0.22% MoM, below the broader market consensus of roughly 0.27%–0.30%. Headline inflation may remain hot while underlying price pressure cools.

That split matters for crypto.$Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$ has fallen about 7% this week alongside $SPDR Gold ETF (GLD.US)$ , as higher-for-longer rate expectations pressure non-yielding assets. CoinDesk reported that the latest rebound was driven mainly by short covering, with more than $500 million in bearish positions liquidated, while spot demand has yet to recover decisively.
Investors can also use options to position around tonight’s volatility; for Bitcoin exposure, an $iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT.US)$  straddle offers a way to trade a potentially sharp move in either direction.

A hotter-than-expected core CPI reading could renew pressure on $Ethereum (ETH.CC)$ and ETH-linked names such as $Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR.US)$ . Higher-beta tokens including $Ripple (XRP.CC)$ ,  $Dogecoin (DOGE.CC)$   and $BNB (BNB.CC)$ may also remain volatile.

AI stocks are facing the same macro test. $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$  is down 1.26% pre-market. Storage names remain under pressure, with $Micron Technology (MU.US)$  falling 3.36% and $Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM.US)$ down 2.67%.

BitMine Chairman Tom Lee argued that recent chip weakness partly reflects portfolio reallocation ahead of the SpaceX IPO, rather than a collapse in the AI thesis.$Broadcom (AVGO.US)$  is down 1.76%, while $Marvell Technology (MRVL.US)$  is down 2.73%. Reuters reported that SpaceX is seeking to raise $75 billion, with investor demand exceeding $250 billion.

SpaceX-linked $T-Mobile US (TMUS.US)$  is up 0.58%, while $Alphabet-C (GOOG.US)$ , the investor in SpaceX, is down 0.81% pre-market.

Three scenarios to watch:

* Core CPI below 0.25%: bullish for BTC, AI and long-duration assets
* Core CPI at 0.25%–0.30%: mild relief, but selective rotation may continue
* Core CPI above 0.30%: yields could rise again, pressuring both tech and crypto

Tonight’s key question is simple: will softer core inflation give dip buyers permission to return?
