CN Solicits Opinions on Game Rectification, Shaking Industry Immensely

China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) published on its website the Measures for the Administration of Online Games (Draft for Comments) to solicit the community for public comment.

The Draft stated that online games shall not set incentive rewards on daily log-in, and first-time and continuous recharge; and all online games must set the user recharge limit.

China Business Network reported that the news sent turbulence to the industry. In the view of industry insiders, although the document is still a draft for comments, any implementation will deal a harsh blow to game developers, and will affect their profitability eventually.

Separately, The Paper quoted a game company executive that banning online games from setting incentive rewards on daily log-in does not have a substantial impact.

Yet, the restriction on recharge warrants attention as it does not specify targeting minors only, meaning adults are affected presumably. Looking at the provisions, it remains unclear whether the limits are imposed on accounts or ID cards.

  • FeirreOP : There’s still a chance this will be more practical and reasonable by the time it is final. But unfortunately the damage is done in terms of investor confidence in CN gaming stocks. The industry was on a solid path to recovery just a couple of days ago.
