AI militarization: Is the defense sector due for a valuation rerating?
Crypto mining and compute-linked stocks rallied sharply Tuesday, with the sector gaining nearly 7%. $TeraWulf (WULF.US)$ surged 13.3%, $Cipher Digital (CIFR.US)$ climbed 12.4%, $Hut 8 (HUT.US)$ rose 10.4%, and $Bitdeer Technologies Group (BTDR.US)$ advanced 7.0%. $Riot Platforms (RIOT.US)$ and $Keel Infrastructure (KEEL.US)$ posted gains of around 6%. $IREN Ltd (IREN.US)$ traded at $44.90, up 6.0% on notably heavy volume, while $MARA Holdings (MARA.US)$ rose just 1.6%, highlighting widening dispersion within the group.
As momentum accelerated, IREN saw a clearly directional options flow: 3,000 contracts of the October 2026 $47 calls traded for roughly $4.1 million in premium. Implied volatility stood at 102%, versus prior open interest of just 63 contracts, putting volume-to-open-interest at 47x — a clear sign of new positioning. The calls were actively bought. With a delta of approximately 0.64, the contract is slightly out of the money but carries strong stock-replacement characteristics. This was not deep-out-of-the-money speculation, but a leveraged trend bet. On a delta-adjusted basis, the trade represents exposure equivalent to roughly 190,000 shares. Dealer hedging flows tied to that positioning may themselves reinforce price momentum.

The backdrop for this positioning was not isolated. The AI sector also saw a sentiment catalyst Tuesday after Anthropic announced expanded enterprise capabilities for Claude, including integrations with Google Drive, WordPress, and FactSet, reinforcing expectations of deeper AI penetration into enterprise workflows. While the development has no direct operational link to crypto miners, it strengthened the broader narrative of long-term compute demand expansion. In an environment where AI infrastructure, power consumption, and data center capacity are central themes, mining companies with large-scale power and data center assets are increasingly viewed through a re-rating lens.
Fundamentally, miner profitability remains closely tied to Bitcoin prices. However, industry-wide capital expenditure moderation and delayed expansion timelines have eased near-term supply pressure. At the same time, investors are gradually viewing certain miners not merely as Bitcoin beta plays but as “power assets with compute optionality.” That shift in valuation framework is key to the sector’s expanding elasticity.
That said, implied volatility remains elevated, underscoring the market’s expectation of continued price swings. In a sector where sentiment shifts quickly, momentum can reverse just as fast.
The options flow sends a clear message: capital is positioning for the continuation of a medium-term compute-sector trend rather than a one-day rebound trade. For investors who believe in the compute-asset re-rating thesis, pullbacks may offer more attractive entry points. For those using options, spread structures may be more appropriate in a high-volatility environment to better manage risk.
