battery?? why BYD supply??

$NIO Inc (NIO.US)$ CEO blows so big about NIO capabilities and advanment in battery technology, and yet BYD supplies the new CHEAP EV. CEO might think that it is too low class to fix NIO SUPER battery, I guess.

  • Teck Wang Pang PaPa : It is a team up that was signed to build Batt together at the same time, I guess there will be a team up of partnership soon.

  • VIVEK SURANA : Basically, NiO doesn't have the strength to stand on its own feet after burning so much in R&D. So basically, NiO is begging for partnership on everything like swap, battery , chips, etc. One year ago, the CEO was telling us we would develop our own battery, after spending millions in R&D NiO closed that project.

  • SoundOfMusic VIVEK SURANA: If what you said is true, it is better for Nio to know its own strength. Making own battery can always be done later.

  • ZnWC VIVEK SURANA: CATL has designed this new super-charging battery EV battery that will boost EV charging (and make Nio battery swap redundant). Tesla is a potential customer.

  • bullrider_21 VIVEK SURANA: Partnerships in swap and charging stations are good because they share technologies and costs.

Nio had hoped to develop batteries on its own, and had assembled a team of several hundred people to do so. However, late last year, the company shrunk that business as part of an effort to improve operational efficiency.

For making the batteries in-house, Nio didn't see the possibility of the business helping to improve gross margins within 3 years, so the company opted for other methods, Li said in a Dec 5, 2023 earnings call.

On Dec 6, Reuters said that Nio planned to divest its battery manufacturing unit as part of the company's efforts to turn around, reduce costs and improve efficiency.

  • ZnWC VIVEK SURANA: The largest EV partnership is the adoptation of Tesla NACS and other EV makers using Tesla Supercharger.

Perhaps more importantly, it’s a potential source of revenue—stable “recurring revenue” that could show up quarter over quarter without much fuss—that one analyst has predicted could bring in $20 billion by decade’s end.
