Tesla's 2024 Q1 earnings: A crossroad to where?
Views 147K Contents 321

Tesla beats BYD in terms of Q1 2024 BEV Quarterly %chg and Number of units sold

Xpeng: -64% 22k units
BYD (BEV only): -43% 300k units
Nio: -40% 30k units
Li Auto: -23% 102k units
Tesla: -20% 387k units
The article reported the change in number of vehicles sold from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024 (Quarterly% and Q1 2024 thousand units sales). Almost all automakers reported significant QoQ decline which is very common from Q4 to Q1 due to seasonal factors. Global car carrier shortages made this year's seasonality much worse. Note: 'BEV only' means only the sales change of pure electric vehicle sales. Without such a label, the change reflects the automaker total vehicle sales change (ICE, BEV, Hybrids, etc).
My take: The above showed that Tesla Q1 delivery wasn't that bad after all. In fact, Tesla beats BYD in terms of BEV sales in Q1 2024 and BYD's %decline is more than 2 times that of Tesla. This is a fair comparison of Q1 2024 EV delivery which mainstream media don't want you to see. They will only show you monthly delivery without comparison across the EV industry. When it comes to EPS and PE ratio, they will compare Tesla with M7 companies without showing you other EV stocks.

  • dwarrior : Is not about beating. Is the sales dropping that people have concern

  • ZnWCOP dwarrior: This post is made because I am concerned about BYD and Nio EV sales dropping. You didn't read the whole content, mainstream media won't tell you this info.

  • 74216494 ZnWCOP: Correct. During Q1 this year, NIO sold less cars than one year ago. No wonder, heavy losses continuing. How should ONVO change this, facing stiff competition, and small, if any profit. How many Million ONVOs to sell every quarter, to compensate for all the other losses, NIO is generating ?

I reflected trading experiences by writing journals. My comments are for educational purposes not financial advice.
