AU Morning Wrap: Shares Flat, Sigma Soars 68%
Wall Street Summary
Fresh inflation data released Tuesday kept investors' soft-landing hopes alive, propelling U.S. stocks upward.
The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ rose 0.5 per cent. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ gained 173 points, or 0.5 per cent. The $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ added 0.7 per cent.
All three indexes closed at fresh 52-week highs for a third session in a row. The S&P 500 and Dow rose to their highest closing levels since January 2022, while the Nasdaq reached its highest close since March 2022. The major indexes are going on their seventh consecutive week of gains.
AU Market Watch
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU)$ rose 0.2 per cent at the open as gains among the banks and supermarkets were offset by falls in the energy sector as benchmark oil prices dropped 3.5 per cent this morning.
Stocks to Watch
$Sigma Healthcare Ltd(SIG.AU)$: Pharmacies retailer Sigma soared 68 per cent to $1.27 after it revealed plans to merge with Chemist Warehouse, although some analysts doubt whether the ACCC will approve the deal.
$HMC Capital Ltd(HMC.AU)$: HMC Capital, the fund manager that has a significant stake in Sigma, jumped 16¢ to $5.58 at the open.
$Air New Zealand Ltd(AIZ.AU)$: Air New Zealand dropped 1 per cent after it downgraded guidance on weak demand.
$Newmont Corp(NEM.AU)$: Gold miner Newmont dropped 2.1 per cent as the price of the precious metal slipped below $US2000 an ounce to $US1197 an ounce on Wednesday morning.
$Woodside Energy Group Ltd(WDS.AU)$: Oil producer Woodside dropped 0.9 per cent as weak oil prices weighed on investors' minds.
