AU Evening Wrap: Bank Rally Leads Australia Shares 0.7% Higher
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 0.7% higher at 7087.3, with losses in utility stocks offset by strong outings from industrial, technology and financial shares.
The major banks rose between 0.8% and 1.3%, while $Macquarie Group Ltd(MQG.AU$ gained 2.1%. Domestic insurers $Suncorp Group Ltd(SUN.AU$ and $Insurance Australia Group Ltd(IAG.AU$ were the best-performing financial stocks, rising 2.5% and 3.1%, respectively.
Utility shares declined 1.0%, dragged by $Origin Energy Ltd(ORG.AU$, which fell 1.9% after its board rejected a revised takeover proposal by Brookfield and EIG. Fellow utility stock $AGL Energy Ltd(AGL.AU$ lost 2.7%.
Technology stock $IRESS Ltd(IRE.AU$ was the session's best performer, climbing 15% after the company raised its FY 2023 guidance.
