AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 1.1% to First Record Close Since August 2021
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ rose 1.1% to a record close of 7680.7 as investors saw moderating December-quarter inflation improving the chances of central-bank interest-rate cuts.
Rate-sensitive bank and real-estate stocks jumped after annual inflation slowed to 4.1% in the December quarter, from 5.4% three months earlier.
Financials, the largest of the ASX 200's 11 sectors, rose 1.5% as the benchmark index beat its previous record, set in August 2021. $CommBank(CBA.AU$, $Macquarie Group Ltd(MQG.AU$, $National Australia Bank Ltd(NAB.AU$, $Westpac Banking Corp(WBC.AU$ and $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd(ANZ.AU$, which comprise about 22% of the ASX 200 by market capitalization, added between 1.3% and 1.5%.
