AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.9%, Snapping a Four-session Losing Streak
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ ended 0.9% higher at 7520.5, snapping a four-session losing streak. Data out Tuesday showed that Australian consumer confidence rose strongly last week amid hopes that inflation is cooling and expectations that interest rates could fall by midyear.
All sectors finished in the green except for energy stocks, which lost 0.1%. Technology, healthcare and consumer staples were key drivers of the benchmark index's performance, rising 2.0%, 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively.
Alumina was the best-performing stock, closing 7.7% higher after joint-venture partner Alcoa said it will stop producing alumina at the Kwinana refinery in Western Australia.
The major banks rallied, rising between 0.9% and 1.3%.
