$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 1.0% higher at 7040.6, recording its best day in almost a month on broad-based gains. The benchmark index surged ahead following a positive lead by U.S. equities and kept gaining amid surveys showing consumer confidence at its highest since February and businesses reporting signs of moderating inflation.
All 11 ASX 200 sectors finished higher, with utilities' 4.2% gain leading the way. The energy sector added 0.8% as oil prices gained amid the Israel-Hamas war.
$Origin Energy Ltd(ORG.AU$ jumped 5.5% after Australia's antitrust regulator said it wouldn't oppose a takeover by a Brookfield-led consortium.
$Core Lithium Ltd(CXO.AU$ was up 7.4 per cent to 36.5¢ after Citi upgraded the shares to neutral. $Pilbara Minerals Ltd(PLS.AU$ and $IGO Ltd(IGO.AU$ were also upgraded to a buy, and the broker forecast lithium prices to remain strong over the long term.
Pilbara Minerals jumped 6.2 per cent to $3.96 and IGO gained 3.5 per cent to $11.43.
$The Star Entertainment Group Ltd(SGR.AU$ rose 4.2 per cent to 62¢ after major shareholder and billionaire Bruce Mathieson bought up shares outside the casino's operator's recent capital raising. Following the raise, Mr Mathieson's stake in the company shrunk from almost 10 per cent to 6.35 per cent.
