AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Edge Up 0.1% on Bank, Energy Strength
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 0.1% higher at 7058.4 on strength in financial and energy stocks, the latter lifted by higher oil prices. The benchmark index moved between narrow gains and losses through the session, ultimately avoiding a third straight decline even as seven of its 11 sectors lost ground.
The financial sector, which comprises more than 25% of the ASX 200 by market capitalization, put on 0.6% amid gains by major lenders. $Westpac Banking Corp(WBC.AU$, $CommBank(CBA.AU$, $National Australia Bank Ltd(NAB.AU$ and $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd(ANZ.AU$ added between 0.6% and 0.75%.
Exchange operator ASX added 1.1% after announcing a contract for its long-overdue new clearing system.
The second-largest sector, materials, was flat.
The energy sector jumped 1.3%, with $Santos Ltd(STO.AU$, $Woodside Energy Group Ltd(WDS.AU$ and $Karoon Energy Ltd(KAR.AU$ rising between 1.1% and 3.4%.
