$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 0.3% higher at 6997.4, carried to a fifth straight gain by strength in financial and healthcare stocks. The benchmark traded in positive territory all day following a positive lead by U.S. equities, but failed in several attempts to retake the 7000-point level it lost almost three weeks ago.
Traders are likely waiting on Tuesday's interest-rate decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia before placing major bets.
Banks $CommBank(CBA.AU$, $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd(ANZ.AU$, $National Australia Bank Ltd(NAB.AU$ and $Westpac Banking Corp(WBC.AU$ put on between 0.5% and 1.95% after Westpac reported a 26% rise in annual profit and announced a A$1.5 billion share buyback.
