AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Edge 0.1% Higher, BHP, Rio and Fortescue Fell to 2024 Lows
Australia's $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 0.1% higher at 7712.5, steadying from a hefty week-opening slump. The benchmark index traded in a narrow 35-point range following a mixed session from U.S. equities. The ASX 200, which shed 1.8% Monday for its worst day in a year, gradually gave back most of its modest early gains.
Energy was the worst of the 11 sectors, falling 0.8% on weakness in shares of coal miners and its two largest oil explorers, $Woodside Energy Group Ltd(WDS.AU$ and $Santos Ltd(STO.AU$.
The materials sector closed flat and the heavyweight financials inched 0.2% higher thanks to gains by insurers.
Tech was the best performing sector, adding 1.15% as $WiseTech Global Ltd(WTC.AU$, $Xero Ltd(XRO.AU$ and $Nextdc Ltd(NXT.AU$ all finished higher.
