AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Close 0.5% Higher, Just Shy of Record
Australia's $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ rose 0.5% to 7698.7, finishing less than a point away from a record close. The benchmark index wobbled in early trade but made it into positive territory in the afternoon and climbed steadily to within a point of its Feb. 2 record.
Ten of the ASX 200's 11 sectors finished higher, with only utilities ending in the red. Materials rose for the first time this week amid strength in gold stocks. Banks were mixed and consumer stocks rose.
Diversified miner $South32 Ltd(S32.AU$ climbed 4.6% after announcing the sale of its Illawarra Metallurgical Coal business for up to $1.65 billion.
Private-hospital operator $Ramsay Health Care Ltd(RHC.AU$ added 7.3% after announcing a better-than-expected H1 result.
