Amazon is building its own natural gas power plant in Texas

$X-Energy (XE.US)$ Soaring demand for AI computing power is driving hyperscale tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta to invest in fossil-fuel-based power generation to bring data centers online as quickly as possible—Amazon's move fits squarely within this trend.
Data center construction has already triggered political backlash in multiple regions, with criticism focused on carbon emissions, water consumption, and impacts on residential land use. This week, Texas announced it is halting approvals for new data center projects until electricity regulators complete audits of each proposed facility. Currently, around 90% of Texas’s incremental electricity demand comes from data centers, which have applied for a total of 474 GW of power—more than five times the historical peak electricity demand across most parts of the state.
Amid delays in grid interconnection and new power supply development, tech companies are exploring various alternatives—from building on-site natural gas power plants to investing in future nuclear reactors. Amazon’s Texas project is the latest manifestation of this energy anxiety.
