Get to know David
🎤 Hi David, nice to meet you. Could you please briefly introduce yourself to mooers?
Hello everyone, I'm David Liu, 38 years old, currently residing in the United States. By profession, I am a software engineer. For the past two years, I have immersed myself in the world of trading, specifically honing in on short-term strategies. My primary focus has been on stocks such as $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ and $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ , which offer substantial opportunities for keen traders. A personal motivator for my trading endeavors is my wife's fondness for Hermès products. I'm driven to succeed in the stock market to indulge her love for these luxury items. After all, nothing is more rewarding than seeing her happy. I have two Shiba Inus named Nana and Leo; they're a delightful pair of Shiba spouses. Not too long ago, they had a litter of charming little Shiba puppies, all of whom have now found loving homes with some of my friends, haha!

Beginnings and Opportunities
🎤 When did you start trading, and what or who inspired you to begin?
I jumped into trading back in 2024, mainly because the U.S. elections were creating a lot of buzz and really piqued my interest. I kicked things off with a modest $5,000, thinking it was enough to dip my toes in the water without going all in. As I got the hang of things, I felt more confident and ramped up my investment to $50,000. Initially, I was aiming for a modest 5% return, thinking it was a realistic goal for a beginner like me. However, by the start of this year, I found myself down by 9.95%, with over 90% of that loss coming from a single stock, $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ , which was highly volatile and tested my patience more than I could handle. On a brighter note, I did manage to make some good calls with other stocks like $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ and $ProShares UltraPro Short QQQ ETF (SQQQ.US)$ , which helped offset some of the losses. I also share my trading updates on the moomoo community platform. Feel free to follow me or add me as a friend there, and we can share more trading tips and insights!

🎤 What was your initial understanding of trading?
Initially, I thought trading was all about the basic idea of buying low and selling high. I figured it was just a matter of catching those price differences to make a profit.

🎤 When did you join Moomoo, and what led you to choose this platform?
I signed up for Moomoo in November 2024 after watching a recommendation from a well-known stock market vlogger on YouTube. What really drew me to Moomoo was its trading hours; you can start trading as early as 1 AM PST. This was a game changer for me, especially compared to Fidelity, my previous platform, where trading didn’t start until 4 AM. This early start means I can react faster to global market changes, which is a huge plus. Click to learn more about trading hours for US stocks.

🎤 How did you learn to invest after starting to use the Moomoo platform? Which tools or resources were particularly helpful?
I found the market position and order book data particularly useful. These tools helped me to trade more strategically rather than just relying on gut feelings or basic price movements. If you are not familiar with these features, you can check out the official moomoo introduction articles below.

🎤 Do you remember your first trade on Moomoo? What was the rationale behind the choice of stock and how did you decide on the buy and sell points?
Absolutely, my first trades on Moomoo were with $Trump Media & Technology (DJT.US)$ and $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ during the election period. I chose these stocks mainly because of their high volatility at the time, which created numerous opportunities to buy low and sell high. My strategy was primarily focused on day trading, looking to capitalize on short-term price movements throughout the trading day. I kept a close eye on market trends and news that could influence stock prices, using them to guide my decisions on when to enter and exit trades.

🎤 How has your experience been on the Moomoo platform? Which specific features have helped you make wise trading decisions? Any suggestions for improvement?
My experience on the Moomoo platform has been positive, largely due to its robust trading tools such as the stop-loss and limit order features. These have been instrumental in managing my trading risks effectively. The ability to adjust stop-loss orders upwards as the market moves in my favor has been a particularly valuable strategy, allowing me to lock in profits systematically and protect my gains. This feature enables precise control over my trading positions, ensuring that I can execute my trading strategy more effectively. It helps in minimizing potential losses and maximizing profits.
You might not be aware that Moomoo offers a variety of different order types, and you might not know the differences between them either. I'd suggest taking some time over a weekend to really dive into understanding these. After all, one of the key steps in trading is getting familiar with the tools you're using. It could really make a difference in how effectively you manage your trades. Click to learn more about moomoo order types

Trading Skills and Experience
🎤 Could you share some insights from the intraday trading charts you've posted in the Moomoo community?
I often look at key moving averages such as the 200-day, 100-day, and 5-day lines because they're really important. Usually, if there's a consolidation at lower price levels, it could hints at an upcoming rise. On the flip side, consolidation at higher levels might signal a potential drop. These patterns are generally good bets, BUT keep in mind, there are always exceptions to the rule.
🎤 What challenges have you faced in trading, and how have you adjusted your strategies to overcome them?
Patience really plays a huge role, particularly when dealing with stagnant stock prices. It's better to miss out on some gains than to make a hasty decision and suffer losses. On April 2nd, I went in with a 2X short on $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ , betting on a drop after the expected tariff announcement. The stock did fall early on, but to my surprise, it surged during the trading session, leaving me in a tough spot at $354. At its peak, I was nearly down 30%, but I held my ground and didn't sell. Later, as tariffs intensified on Thursday and Friday, I gradually recouped my losses and ended up making a profit. It was a nerve-wracking process, and there were several moments when I was tempted to sell, but sticking it out paid off. If I had held on a bit longer, the returns could have been even better. This trade involved a huge swing of about 40%, making it quite a challenging one.

🎤 Could you share a memorable trading experience, detailing a successful and a challenging trade?
One of my most challenging trades recently involved $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ . Despite a lot of skepticism in the online community and no major shifts in the company’s fundamentals, I decided to build up my positions gradually. It was a tough decision that really tested my patience and analysis skills, but it turned out to be quite enlightening.
On the flip side, one of my most successful trades was with $Tesla (TSLA.US)$ . I managed the trade around specific price points—$380, $400, and $420—capitalizing on multiple opportunities to lock in profits. My trading approach is generally cautious with high-volatility stocks; I prefer not to hold them overnight to avoid potential losses from unexpected market movements after hours. This strategy has significantly helped in reducing risk while allowing me to benefit from intra-day price movements.

Advice & Future Plan
🎤 Do you have any advice for beginners in trading?
Start by keeping an eye on the financial reports of individual stocks. Pay particular attention to recent news that could trigger market fluctuations. Additionally, strive to understand the broader economic conditions and cycles over the long term. This foundational knowledge will help you make more informed decisions in the stock market.
🎤 Can you share a bit about your plans for continuing to learn about trading?
Although I'm currently only trading stocks and not planning to trade options, I am learning about how options trading can impact stock prices. This knowledge could be very beneficial in the future. So, if you're also exploring options trading, I'd love for us to exchange ideas and learn together!
