Musk Says Nvidia Can't Meet Tesla's Hardware Needs, Is Building Its Own Supercomputer

Tesla $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ CEO Musk said on Wednesday that Tesla's demand for Nvidia $NVIDIA(NVDA.US)$ hardware is so huge that the chipmaker can't meet it. During Tesla's second-quarter earnings call, Musk discussed Tesla's self-built supercomputer and its huge demand for high-performance NVIDIA chips.

Musk said on the earnings call, "We use a lot of NVIDIA hardware. As soon as NVIDIA can deliver, we'll take it."

According to Musk, NVIDIA has too many customers vying for its products. Even though the company has prioritized some of Tesla's orders, NVIDIA still can't deliver the number of chips Tesla needs.

Tesla has been working with NVIDIA for years, and the electric carmaker already runs a supercomputer powered by NVIDIA. But the demand for NVIDIA chips is putting pressure on customers like Tesla due to the artificial intelligence boom.

To address that, Musk said Tesla is building its own supercomputer - called Dojo - that runs on customized silicon chips. The company said it will begin building the machine this month.

Musk said, "If NVIDIA could provide us with enough GPUs, we might not need Dojo, but they can't."

NVIDIA has benefited greatly from the AI boom and its growth is unlikely to slow down anytime soon. Tesla's demand for Nvidia and its own hardware also illustrates the breadth of the AI market and the variety of application scenarios ranging from Musk's pursuit of self-driving cars to smart home systems.

When OpenAI debuted its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot in November 2022, the AI boom began to explode. One of the fastest-growing applications in history, ChatGPT sparked the generative AI revolution. Microsoft $Microsoft(MSFT.US)$ , which has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, used the company's technology to launch its Bing chatbot and Edge web browser in February.
