Twitter $Twitter (Delisted)(TWTR.US)$ has threatened to sue Meta Platforms $Meta Platforms(META.US)$ over its new Threads platform, accusing the Facebook parent company of hiring former Twitter employees who had access to Twitter's trade secrets and other confidential information. Meta launched Threads on Wednesday and has already garnered over 30 million sign-ups to take on Elon Musk's Twitter by leveraging Instagram's vast user base. However, a Meta spokesperson has denied the allegations, stating that no former Twitter employees are part of the Threads engineering team. Meanwhile, Twitter owner Musk commented, "Competition is fine, cheating is not." Despite the similarity in the user interface, Threads currently lacks certain features, such as keyword searches and direct messages.
Have you tried out Threads yet? Do you think Twitter's threat to sue Meta Platforms is justified, or do you see it as an attempt to stifle competition? What are your thoughts on the ongoing issue between social media platforms?

  • ZnWC : I haven't tried out Meta Thread. Twitter sued Meta Thread is about trade secret issue but media likes to publicise the trial as the 2 platforms fighting for market share.

Personally I think it is too early to tell if the sue will affect the share price. Commercial trial is quite common in US and it may be a tactic to force a company to settle for compensation. Apple and Samsung had many sue against each other about copyright and yet their share price remained undented.

Unless the sue trial reveals something more serious, it'll be forgotten after the case ends and business as usual. But the battle for market share and cage fight will continue.

  • Kopikarp : I have used Threads since launch. In its current state, it's quite unstable. For example, the app flash quits whenever I attach a photo. That said, it provides a more enjoyable viewing experience than Twitter: less intrusive ads and less scam spams.

I highly doubt the Twitter lawsuit based on stolen trade secret is valid. Multiple reports stated that no former Twitter staff works at Threads, suggesting that Meta anticipated this and took preventive measures to avoid infringement.

However, I feel that Meta is not going far enough. Reddit is also currently under threat from user backlash despite heading towards an IPO. If Threads can capitalize on this vulnerability and add topic support with post voting, it could steal even more users.

  • NiceOne : Americans sue or threaten to all the time. Apple have sued Microsoft during the 1900s over Windows design. With corporates, they are typically just grandstanding. It'll just end with a whimper and an out of court settlement. Nothing to see here.

  • 102765799 : These news have transient effects on the prices of the shares but likely will normalise soon after with little impact again
