Marubeni forms a business partnership with a Spanish company to expand sales of wind propulsion equipment for ships

Marubeni announced on the 22nd that it has signed a business partnership agreement with the Spanish engineering company Bound for Blue (B4b), which develops wind propulsion devices for ships.

We will promote domestic and international sales of the device “e-sail,” which obtains propulsion by guiding air into the inside of a sail. We will incorporate the need for equipment that can improve fuel efficiency for the shipping industry, where greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction momentum is intensifying.

In an e-sail, air guidance to the inside of the sail creates the effect of wind flowing smoothly around the sail. Propulsion can be efficiently obtained from renewable energy.

Marubeni and B4b have mounted e-sail on a Panamax-type bulk carrier owned by Marubeni's Singaporean subsidiary MMSL, and are also proceeding with a project to verify the reduction effects of GHG. Although it depends on weather conditions, a maximum reduction of 15 to 20% of GHG emissions is expected.
