Heavyweight financials and materials sectors provided a boost, rising 0.7% and 1.2% respectively.
Still, technology and telecom services stocks proved to be a drag falling 0.4% and 0.7%, respectively.
$Collins Foods Ltd(CKF.AU$ was the best performer, rising almost 18% after announcing plans to build as many as 12 KFC Australia stores in FY 2024.
The major banks-- $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd(ANZ.AU$, $CommBank(CBA.AU$, $National Australia Bank Ltd(NAB.AU$ and $Westpac Banking Corp(WBC.AU$--rose between 0.5% and 1.6%.
Private health insurer $NIB Holdings Ltd(NHF.AU$ fell 1.5%, while rival $Medibank Private Ltd(MPL.AU$ lost 3.9% after the prudential regulator said it would impose extra capital requirements on it in the wake of its cyberattack.
$Qantas Airways Ltd(QAN.AU$ fell 1.0%, despite saying that domestic capacity was back to pre-Covid levels.
