The Australian sharemarket finished higher for the last trading session of the week, taking a positive lead from Wall Street overnight when the S&P 500 entered a bull market after rallying 20 per cent from its October 12 low.
The benchmark $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ rose 0.3 per cent, or 22.8 points to 7122.5 at market close on Friday, buoyed by a rally in technology and mining stocks.
Five out of 11 sectors were in the green with technology stocks recording the most gains. The sector rallied 1.6 per cent after chipmakers Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices recorded big gains that fuelled a 1.3 per cent rise to the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 on Thursday.
$WiseTech Global Ltd(WTC.AU$ shares jumped 2.6 per cent to $75.88. $Xero Ltd(XRO.AU$ gained 2.7 per cent to $109.08. $Altium Ltd(ALU.AU$ rose 1.4 per cent to $37.32. $Weebit Nano Ltd(WBT.AU$ climbed 2 per cent to $6.67. $Codan Ltd(CDA.AU$ added 3.2 per cent to $7.66.
Miners rallied as iron ore futures traded higher during the late afternoon on the Singapore exchange, up 0.7 per cent to $US112.60 a tonne on the June contract.
$BHP Group Ltd(BHP.AU$ shares rallied 1.3 per cent to $44.72 a share. $Fortescue Ltd(FMG.AU$ was up 1.4 per cent to $20.79. The iron ore miner also announced that has appointed former chief executive Elizabeth Gaines as executive director.
$Nickel Industries Ltd(NIC.AU$ was the best performing stock, it surged 13.3 per cent 98¢.
