Apple & Adidas brought Lionel Messi to the MLS?
Even though Lionel Messi joining Inter Miami is footballing world news, it could have some positive implications for both.
It has been weeks of speculation whether Lionel Messi could return back to FC Barcelona after a tough season at PSG, but it has definitely thrown the footballing world by surprise that he is bound for the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.
There has been news on how $Apple(AAPL.US$ and $adidas AG(ADDYY.US$ could be brokering and helping this deal. But how will these 2 listed companies benefit and actually help convince Messi the move?
1. Apple - Revenue sharing of MLS season pass new subscribers with Messi
For those who are unaware, Apple TV in the US offers the MLS Season Pass, which is the MLS subscription package to air and broadcast MLS matches.
It is similar to the English Premier League broadcasting rights in Singapore.
With Messi joining the MLS, it could increase the subscription of the MLS season pass, and Apple would be more than happy to share a portion of that revenue with Messi.
2. Adidas - Profit sharing for an increase in sales and profit in the US
Adidas and $Nike(NKE.US$ has always been head-to-head in the sporting world branding. But when it comes to sales in the US, homegrown Nike has always had an edge against bitter rivals Adidas.
Adidas' sales in the US has always been underwhelming when compared to Nike's.
However, with Messi going to the MLS, Adidas would gladly bank on this World Cup champion and superstar to boost their sales in the States.
It might be too early, but at least for now, we can say its really good marketing and collaboration!
