razo2OP williamlow85: maybe they are looking at next week closing of 4.4 mil options instead? yesterday was only 1.1 mil. so the question is it worth to bring the index down for 1.1 mil options or 4.4 mil options. you need to remember max pain rely totally on who have the bigger wallet to swing the index.
razo2OP williamlow85: also max pain is to inflict maximum damage on both options trade both call and puts. so sometimes can be a bit hard to hit on the spot, Hegde Fund won't mind paying out some as long as the majority is losing. if you see yesterday, majority is still puts. they only interest in making money. look at last year December, was the 1 of 2 times retail won in the max pain where the options favor the puts due to JP announced the higher terminal rate.
