The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ dropped 1.4 per cent, or 96.3 points, to 6898.5 on Monday, as investors weighed the takeover of Credit Suisse and eyed the Federal Reserve's policy meeting this week.
Positive early readings on UBS's agreement to buy Credit Suisse, and central bank moves to boost dollar liquidity, gave way to a more cautious sentiment as the trading day progressed; US and European equity futures turned negative in afternoon trading while the greenback fluctuated.
Gold miners rallied following the recent surge in the price of the precious metal; $St Barbara Ltd(SBM.AU$ jumped 15.8 per cent to 66¢ and $Gold Road Resources Ltd(GOR.AU$ rose 11 per cent to $1.67.
$Evolution Mining Ltd(EVN.AU$ jumped 10.1 per cent to $2.84 after announcing it has commenced underground production at its Cowal operation ahead of schedule.
$Australian Clinical Labs Ltd(ACL.AU$ firmed 2.2 per cent to $$3.68 following its takeover offer for $Healius Ltd(HLS.AU$. Healius added 8.3 per cent to $3.01.
