Genuinely curious, how do they win?

How do they win? Under what circumstances does this end and the hedge funds walk away with their heads held high? Obviously it’s a total war at the moment, but the price is so low right now that it makes me wonder why they are battling so hard. Do they really need this stock to go to zero to get out alive? Is it that they’re short positions are so crazy that even if the stock was at one dollar, closing their positions would cause a gigantic run?
