The Australian sharemarket bounced on Wednesday following three days of heavy losses as concerns about a US banking crisis eased, and the latest US inflation report came in line with forecasts, reinforcing hopes the Federal Reserve will opt for a smaller rate rise next week.
A relief rally on Wall Street sparked by a rebound in regional bank stocks spilled over to Australia as fears about contagion in the global financial system were alleviated following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.
The local financials sector firmed 0.9 per cent led by the regional banks; $Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Ltd(BEN.AU$ rose 2.1 per cent to $9.09, $Bank of Queensland Ltd(BOQ.AU$ climbed 2.3 per cent to $6.62 and $Suncorp Group Ltd(SUN.AU$ firmed 1.9 per cent to $12.14. All four major banks also advanced.
The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ climbed 0.9 per cent, or 60 points, to 7068.9 on Wednesday, while the broad All Ordinaries firmed a similar amount to 7263.1.
The local technology sector climbed 2.4 per cent, following a strong lead from Wall Street where the Nasdaq rallied 2.1 per cent.
$Block Inc(SQ2.AU$ jumped 3.9 per cent to $108.40, $Xero Ltd(XRO.AU$ firmed 4 per cent to $88.47, and $Link Administration Holdings Ltd(LNK.AU$ advanced 6 per cent to $2.13.
