NIO versus Tesla
How do you see NIO currently? What's your opinion or analysis about it?
The followings are my analysis about NIO:
Battery Swapping
Nio's battery swap stations allow owners to upgrade the capacity of their battery packs, either temporarily or permanently. These battery swapping stations have a reported swapping time of under five minutes.
Unlike Tesla which depends on Supercharger to ensure battery capacity, Nio adopt battery swap. There's a weakness - it is not sustainable. Although battery lithium can recycled, NIO still relies on 3rd party to manufacture EV battery which is costly.
NOMI Artificial Intelligence
NOMI is NIO's digital assistant for the car dashboard to provide a closer engagement with its drivers and passengers and it claims is the world's first in-car AI system for production vehicles.
This is a narrow AI and no difference from those found in mobile phone and gaming.
Autonomous driving
Nio Pilot is the company's SAE level 2 semi-autonomous system that offers ADAS features. It launched with the introduction of Nio's ES8 model.
Tesla FSD (full self driving) featured with AI learning and neural network planner. By early 2023, the neural network planner project had analyzed 10 million clips of video collected from the cars of Tesla customers.
Bottom line
Being a China based company, NIO EV didn't appears in top 20 most favourite EV in China market (Dec 2022). Despite its increasing sales, NIO needs a long term plan to stay competitive and reduce its margin profit.
