Broadcom and VIVOTEK Extend Merger Deadline by 90 Days

Chipmaker Broadcom $Broadcom(AVGO.US)$ and cloud computing company VeriSign $Vmware(VMW.US)$ have extended their $61 billion merger plan by 90 days, according to a regulatory filing Friday. The document said the latest external date for the merger deal between the two companies is May 26.

Broadcom reportedly announced last May that it would acquire VMware for $61 billion, a deal that was one of the world's most significant in 2022 and marked the chipmaker's attempt to drive diversification into the enterprise software space.

However, Broadcom's move comes at a time when global regulators are increasing their scrutiny of deals by large technology companies.

The U.K. competition regulator said in January that it had launched the first phase of its investigation into the acquisition, while the European Union's antitrust regulator said in February that it was resuming its investigation and would decide by June 7 whether to approve or block the deal.

A spokeswoman for Broadcom said acquisitions of this size typically extend the duration of the deal. "We are continuing to make progress with regulators around the world and we continue to expect the transaction to close in Broadcom's fiscal year 2023," the spokeswoman said.
