It's more of, when a company goes ex-dividend, new stock buyers who buy will get the stock, but not the dividend right?
so therefore, they will only be willing to buy the stock at the price of (previous last done price - dividend amount).

for good stocks, after some days, the price goes up again, when people realise the value of the stock.
