Will Musk succeed in turning Twitter into an "American WeChat"?

Elon Musk, president of $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ , said recently that the acquisition of $Twitter (Delisted)(TWTR.US)$ would accelerate his pace of building a WeChat style "super application". However, the success of WeChat based mobile applications outside China has raised doubts and concerns about his "super application" plan.

"It will not be easy," said Emily Parker, executive director of international content at CoinDesk, a digital financial media. "Even if WeChat is so powerful in China, it has not achieved the same success in the West."

"Everything App" or "Super App" generally refers to mobile applications containing multiple functions and services. WeChat, which is indispensable to the daily life of Chinese people, is a "super application". In addition to the basic communication function, WeChat users can use the application to make financial payments, read news, pay fees, etc., or go to a third-party platform through WeChat to call a car, book a meal, book a ticket, book a hotel, shop, etc.

The US and other western countries have not yet seen WeChat style "super applications", which is why Musk believes that his universal application 'X' has the possibility of success.

"If you are in China, you almost live on WeChat. It can do anything," Musk said in an interview in May this year. "We don't have anything like this outside China. Applications like this can be very useful."

Musk is not the first Western technology entrepreneur who wants to create "super applications". In the past few years, Mark Zuckerberg, president of $Meta Platforms(META.US)$, the parent company of Facebook, has continuously added new features to his company's social media Facebook and Instagram, including games, dating, shopping, podcasts, etc. SnapChat, a popular photo software in the US, is also developing towards "super software".
