AU Morning Wrap: ASX edges higher, NZ GDP rises 1.7%
Wall Street Summary
US stocks eked out slender gains in choppy trade after wholesale inflation figures landed broadly in line with expectations, soothing some of the fear released by Tuesday's "hot" consumer price data. The major indices seesawed in and out of negative territory before a late up-tick.
The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ gained 13 points or 0.34 per cent. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ rose 30 points or 0.1 per cent. The $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ put on 86 points or 0.74 per cent.
US producer prices recorded back-to-back monthly declines for the first time since 2020. The producer price index eased 0.1 per cent last month, extending a 0.4 per cent decline in July. On a 12-month basis, prices were 8.7 per cent higher than the same month last year, an improvement on July's 9.8 per cent reading.

AU Market Watch
The S&P/ASX 200 was set to open just above yesterday's close after ASX futures edged up six points or 0.1 per cent. The Australian benchmark yesterday suffered its worst hit in three months, diving 181 points or 2.58 per cent.

Australian shares opened higher this morning. The $S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU)$ gained 0.22 per cent to 6843.3 as of 10:13 am.
The August labour force report is set to be released at 11.30am AEST.

New Zealand Economy
New Zealand's economy grew more than expected in the second quarter, avoiding a recession after a surge in COVID-19 cases caused a contraction in the first three months of the year.

Gross domestic product rose 1.7 per cent from the first quarter, when it fell 0.2 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said Thursday in Wellington. Economists forecast a 1 per cent increase. From a year ago, the economy expanded 0.4 per cent, cooling from its 1 per cent annual pace in the previous quarter.
