Diversification Dominates
The institutional shareholders with the largest portfolios are generally diversified and hold a thousand or more stocks. The two largest, Vanguard Group and BlackRock both saw their portfolios increase in size during the second quarter.
Berkshire Hathaway is an exception among the large institutions. It cut its total positions to 46 from 50 in the second quarter. Banks and energy stocks make up a large percentage of its portfolio outside of its number one position, Apple.
