TeslaSmurf : I know China and the Chinese people: they are smart, wise, practical but also ruthless when the stake is big: remember the 10000 students KILLED by the so-called communist party at Tien-an-men, Peking ?
The ruling party has evolved, trying to manage their socialist inspiration in a super capitalistic and consumeristic society (otherways they would have remained poor). They know that if they attack Taiwan they will cause a massacre (because the Taiwanese don’t want a dictatorship telling how to live) and the massacre would cause the collapse of the global commerce. As the Chinese industry is mostly set for exportation, their economy would collapse too and the country would deeply destabilise: the worst peril for the ruling and self-empowered oligarchy. WISDOM suggests to keep things as they are and TIME will probably lead to the best solution: maybe an autonomous province, with an elected government and some social principles added to the constitution, in exchange of peace, indipendency, and military protection under the Chinese army. Possibly with a US base and territory, like Guantanamo in Cuba: that has granted Cuba’s  independency and safety for 70 years (though they stayed poor). It may take 20 or 30 years because in order to achieve that the Chinese society and organisation still needs to level up with the Taiwanese in terms of wealth, individual freedom and less censorship… but they may get there.
Any other forced attempt would mark the end of the world as we know it and, most probably, the end of the communist ruling party.
