On Wednesday, General Motors announced a new electric version of the Chevrolet Blazer with the stated objective of taking on $Tesla(TSLA.US)$'s Model Y. During $General Motors(GM.US)$'s GES 2022 conference, CEO Mary Barra revealed that a Chevy Equinox EV and a Blazer EV are in the pipeline--and they're coming to the US market sooner than many would expect.
Barra said the compact and midsize SUV segments are growing segments in the US. Moreover, GM aims to include EVs in those markets. The Equinox EV will also boast a starting price of around $30,000, and the Blazer EV a starting price of $45,000. Both SUVs will hit dealers in 2023. Compared to Tesla, GM has started the race slower in this tortoise-and-hare race. GM has been outspoken about its ambitions to sell 30 different electric vehicle models globally by 2025, positioning itself as Tesla's rival.

Executive on the company's future
"Yeah, to get to mass adoption here, which we talked about a second ago, we are seeing that increase greatly. As a result, the consumer is becoming much more involved in the EV space than they have ever been. I think they're looking for brands that they can trust. So, Chevrolet is certainly there. They're looking for capability, a vehicle that's truly built as an EV.
So we've got entries in all these segments in both ICE and EV. So we're going to have offerings on both sides, if you will. And we're seeing a lot of conquest come into the EV space for sure. But to get the mass adoption that we're looking for, it's going to take getting Chevrolet consumers as well as our competitors' consumers into our portfolio. And we think we've got both ICE and EV entries that are going to give us the best chance to do that. " said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet.
