The second generation of SmartSSD is jointly developed by Samsung Electronics and AMD in the United States, and its computing performance is more than double that of the first generation of SmartSSD launched by the two companies in 2020. Samsung Electronics said that compared to traditional SSDs, the system equipped with the new generation of smart SSDs has a 50% reduction in computing processing time and 70% reduction in power consumption compared to ordinary systems, and the central processing unit (CPU) utilization can be reduced to a maximum of 97%.
As a computer storage device (Computational Storage) that can perform computational processing in storage space, the second generation of Smart SSDs will reportedly provide efficient services for next-generation technologies such as metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, deep learning and machine learning, 5G and 6G, which require processing large amounts of data.
For its part, the company says that unlike the original SSD, the next-generation Smart SSD can process data directly, minimizing data transfers between the CPU, graphics processing unit and random access memory (RAM), thereby improving system performance and energy efficiency.
