CATL battery plant site considered for Mexico, possible supply to Tesla and Ford, with project investment of up to US$5 billion
CATL, the world's largest producer of electric vehicle batteries, is reportedly choosing a site for a plant that could supply Tesla and Ford, with at least two locations in Mexico under consideration.
According to people familiar with the matter, CATL is considering two sites, Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua and Saltillo in Coahuila. They are both located near the Texas border. The company is considering investing up to US$5 billion in the projects.
CATL is also considering spreading this investment between two locations, one in the United States and one in Mexico, according to people familiar with the matter. A final decision has yet to be made and the total size of the investment is to be determined. The media reported in March that the investment could be used to build a plant with an annual capacity of 80 GWh.
CATL and Ford Motor would not comment. Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.
