AAPL 5G baseband chip development failure Qualcomm will remain the exclusive supplier
$Apple(AAPL.US$ iPhone 5G baseband chip development may have failed, so $Qualcomm(QCOM.US$ will continue to be the exclusive supplier of 5G chips for the new iPhone in 2023, with a 100 percent supply share (Qualcomm previously estimated at 20 percent).
As a result of the news, on Tuesday U.S. stocks, Qualcomm closed up 3.48%, while Apple closed down 2.98%.
Apple has been working for years to get rid of Qualcomm, and the two sides have also engaged in a protracted legal battle. Apple had planned to use $Intel(INTC.US$ 's 5G chips in its 2020 iPhones, but ultimately stopped due to Intel's inability to manufacture 5G chips that meet Apple's standards. Apple reached a settlement with Qualcomm in 2019 and subsequently used Qualcomm 5G chips in its iPhone and iPad product lines. Apple even acquired Intel's baseband chip business to get a head start in order to develop its own 5G baseband chips.

RDK79 : Amazing the tons and tons of time and r&d, legal, Intel funds apple has waisted over the years trying to replace Qualcomm. Apple leadership culture certainly didn’t help in this area.
