Hello, mooers.U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed on Monday, June 20, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday for the first time.
Juneteenth National Independence Day officially became a federal holiday last July when President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law. The stock market will be closed on Monday, June 20, albeit the holiday technically fell on Sunday, June 19.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. It was on that date in 1865 that Union Gen. Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation to the people of Galveston, Texas.
Stock exchanges remained open for the holiday last year, as the legislation was signed too late for them to amend their holiday schedules.
As we are halfway through 2022, there are only four upcoming holidays: Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The subsequent incoming holiday closure would be Independence Day on Monday, July 4.
