Metaverse - The New Future or Just Hype?

Anyone who has ever watched the Korean drama “Memories of the Alhambra” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Lcy3XUDd_A must have been intrigued by its portrayal of augmented and virtual reality. Although the drama is pure fiction, we may be closer to a future integrated with AR and VR than we think.

Metaverse is a digital universe for social connection that incorporates VR, AR, holographic avatars, live events, cryptocurrencies, NFTs and digital transactions. Metaverse has been embraced by the likes of $Meta Platforms(FB.US)$ , $Activision Blizzard(ATVI.US)$ $Microsoft(MSFT.US)$ , $Qualcomm(QCOM.US)$ , $Unity Software(U.US)$ , $Autodesk(ADSK.US)$ $Roblox(RBLX.US)$and $TENCENT(00700.HK)$ . Even $Walmart(WMT.US)$ is rumoured to be jumping in and no wonder, for Bloomberg reported on 1 December 2021 that the metaverse market is projected to be worth a cool $800 billion. Meta has shared its vision via a video presentation (below).
Metaverse can allow one to port real-life assets and digital personas in and out of different digital game worlds. Such an interoperable infrastructure opens up possibilities for new forms of shared experiences, be it work meetings, learning, entertainment or social life; this in turn can create new revenue streams for metaverse players. Incredibly, people have started snapping up virtual real estate in metaverse for investment. While all these sound very exciting, I can see the potential for privacy and security issues that needs to be ironed out.

My first experience with virtual reality (VR) was quite a disaster — the hand controls weren’t responsive enough, the headset was clunky and I nearly ran into a wall! It put me off VR after that but if any company can popularise VR and AR, I think it would be Apple. $Apple(AAPL.US)$ could be unveiling an augmented reality (AR) headset as early as 2023. While I’m not sure if metaverse is for me, I will be watching to see how it all unfolds.

  • earthwaterangel : metaverse is the future but maybe for the next generation, the offspring of the richie rich of this generation.

  • beedeebee : This is nothing new if you play games.

  • DadacaiOP earthwaterangel: Yes, I think one needs to have deep pockets. :)

  • DadacaiOP beedeebee: Which particular aspect are you referring to? As you have pointed out, it is mostly confined to gamers now. What they want is to make it more mass market. In the past, the gaming assets purchased by users stay in the game and the game company has the ultimate right over what happens to the assets but this is changing with Play To Earn NFT games.

  • beedeebee : If you play dozen of game, there are games where players selling in game item with fiat, although it stay within the game, it is still a similar concept. Buying digital gift is nothing new too, look at mobile legend and tiktok. There are many other sandbox game that gives user to explore the world with no restrictions. Just by adding VR into the concept doesn't make it an amazing concept. Just my two cents.
