$General Motors(GM.US)$ General Motors CEO Mary Barra unveiled the automaker's new electric truck at this year's CES event in Las Vegas on Wednesday, calling the Chevy Silverado EV a "revolutionary" automobile that will disrupt the electric vehicle market. For nearly a century, GM sold more cars to U.S consumers than any other automaker, but last year Toyota sold 114,000 more cars than its rival. GM is counting on its push into the electric vehicle market to turbocharge lagging sales.
When it eventually hits dealerships, it will find a number of electric trucks already on the market, including the $Rivian Automotive(RIVN.US)$ R1T, $Ford Motor(F.US)$ F-150 Lightning, and likely the $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ Cybertruck.

$Ford Motor(F.US)$ Ford said Tuesday it will nearly double production capacity of its upcoming electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck to 150,000 vehicles a year by mid-2023 in response to customer demand.Ford unveiled the battery-powered version of its F-150 pickup in May 2021, joining other auto makers in the nascent electric-truck segment. The F-150 Lightning undercuts several rivals with a starting price around $40,000.

It will be interesting to see what Ford does with its head start over GM, given the intense rivalry between the two companies in the truck space. “They are huge sellers and profit-generators for their parent companies,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, in an email. “Each has an extremely loyal buyer base. Now they come to market with EV versions. Ford may have a leg up since it is coming to market first. We’ll see.”
