$GlobalFoundries(GFS.US$ was spun off by $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD.US$, it is basically a failed unit of AMD that AMD disposed more than a decade ago.
And then AMD uses $Taiwan Semiconductor(TSM.US$ for chips tells me everything I need to now about GF.

Emmett Kelly : GF is now a private company. Does anyone know they are profitable or not? I am sure AMD spun off GF for a reason. The cost of running a fab in Europe especially Germany is very high. They have strong labor union. In Germany, it is not uncommon to have labor union in the company board. Their goal is not maximizing profitability but to improve work life balance, job security and welfare of all employees. At certain job grade and below, union may negotiate certain percentage of merit increase for all employees in each job grade. It is a socialism system.
Twiggs Emmett Kelly: The so-called "welfare" of employees in Germany is only meant for a handful of permanent employees in private factories whose number is decreasing by every year. The majority of employees are hired through contractors and have temporary status and can be fired at any time as they are not direct employees of the said factory/company, so in this way majority of the modern workforce in Germany are treated like trash just like in any other part of the western capitalistic world.
