Stocks were mixed in the past week ahead of the long Labor Day weekend. The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ gained 0.58% this week, while $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ decreased 0.24% and the $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ moved 1.55% higher.

After a weak jobs report, strategists say investor focus may stay on strong profit growth rather than other potential negatives .Strategists say other issues for stocks in September could include the efforts in Congress to pass infrastructure legislation and possible new taxes.

The week ahead in focus

U.S. stock and bond markets are closed on Monday for Labor Day. The holiday-shortened week then features several notable company updates and economic data releases.

Besides the Fed, the next big event for stocks will be the third-quarter earnings season, which gets underway in early October. Before that, investors will be watching for any company comments on results.

$GameStop(GME.US)$ and $Lululemon Athletica(LULU.US)$ release quarterly results on Wednesday, followed by $International Paper(IP.US)$ on Thursday and $The Kroger(KR.US)$ on Friday. $Analog Devices(ADI.US)$ —fresh off of its $21 billion acquisition of Maxim Integrated Products—will host an investor day on Wednesday. $Moderna(MRNA.US)$ , $Danaher(DHR.US)$ , and $Home Depot(HD.US)$ managements will also speak with investors on Thursday.
